- Best for
- Sunrise chasers and photographers; boulder scramble with the classic Sigiriya view
About this place
The rock next door to Sigiriya — boulders, a half-finished cave temple and a summit slab facing the Lion Rock at sunrise. A few hundred rupees, half a morning, and the tougher, wilder half of the classic pair.
Visitor brief
Good to know before you go
- Thirty to forty-five minutes up; grippy shoes beat flip-flops by a mile.
- Arrive 30 minutes before sunrise to claim a slab; gates open for dawn.
- Small donation entry, a few hundred rupees; leeches after rain.
- Descend for breakfast, then do Sigiriya or the caves as crowds peak.
How to travel there
A few kilometres north of Sigiriya on the same road network; any Sigiriya-bound tuk-tuk from Dambulla or Habarana detours here happily.
Where to stay
Stay in Sigiriya village guesthouses (budget-mid) or Habarana resorts (mid-luxury); the rock pairs with Sigiriya in one morning.
Nearby places
Sigiriya Lion Rock, Dambulla Cave Temple, Minneriya National Park, Habarana
Scams to watch for
- Unofficial 'guides' at the trailhead for an easy marked scramble; a few hundred rupees only if you want company.
- Slippery rock after rain is the real hazard — skip it in a downpour.
