About this place

Visitor brief
Good to know before you go
- Two days does it: the ruins cluster early day one, elephants plus tank day two.
- Gal Vihara at opening light; the Vatadage and palace follow on foot or bike.
- Elephant gathering roughly July to October — confirm locally, book jeeps ahead.
- Stay in new town, tour the old city; bicycles beat everything inside.
How to travel there
In Polonnaruwa District, North Central Province. Trains from Colombo Fort (reserved seats sell out in season) and buses from Colombo, Dambulla and Batticaloa. Bicycles for the ruins, tuk-tuks for the gaps and the tank bund.

Scams to watch for
- 'Site closed today' touts at the ruins gate steering to overpriced tours; the ticket office tells the truth.
- Bicycle hires quoting per-site rates that exceed the day rate; agree the day first.
