- Climbers and history lovers; 5th-century sky palace, frescoes and summit ruins
About this place
Two-hundred-metre rock crowned with King Kashyapa's 5th-century sky palace. Climb past the damsels frescoes and mirror wall through the lion's paws to summit gardens and ramparts. Start early, carry water, and pair it with Pidurangala sunrise.
Visitor brief
Good to know before you go
- Gates open 7am–5pm; start by 8am and allow 2–3 hours for 1,200 steps.
- Foreign adults pay roughly US$30–35; confirm locally, figures drift.
- No photos inside the fresco pocket; shoes and hats rules at shrines.
- Pair with Pidurangala at sunrise the same morning for the classic combo.
How to travel there
Between Dambulla (17 km) and Habarana (10 km) on good roads; tuk-tuk over for opening time. From Kandy about 2.5 hours via Dambulla; from Colombo allow 4–5 hours.
Where to stay
Stay in Dambulla or Habarana guesthouses (budget-mid) or Cultural Triangle resorts (mid-luxury), all an easy tuk-tuk from the rock.
Nearby places
Pidurangala Rock, Dambulla Cave Temple, Minneriya National Park, Habarana
Scams to watch for
- 'Ticket office is closed' touts near the gate steer tourists to overpriced guides; buy at the official counter.
- Wasps nest on the rock face occasionally — if sections are roped off, obey the ropes.
