Scams to avoid
- Unlicensed 'guides' at Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa ruins who attach themselves and demand large fees; agree a price first or hire through the site museum or your hotel
- Ticket confusion: single-site tickets and the Cultural Triangle round ticket are sometimes misdescribed; buy only at official Central Cultural Fund counters and keep the receipt
- Safari overcharging around Habarana/Minneriya: confirm which park, what is included (entry, jeep, driver) and the total per person before boarding
- Tuk-tuk overcharging between spread-out ruins; fix the half-day or full-day hire price before starting
- Fake donation collectors near temples; donate only inside shrines, not to collectors on approach roads
Every destination also carries its own scam notes — browse them in the directory.
Best beaches
- No beaches in North Central Province (fully landlocked); nearest beach escapes are Trincomalee/Uppuveli and Pasikuda on the east coast, about 2.5-3.5 hours by road from Polonnaruwa
Where to eat
- Polonnaruwa: Jaga Food near 22 Junction for acclaimed lunchtime rice and curry (lunch only, go early)
- Anuradhapura: Palhena Village Restaurant on Freeman Road and Seedevi Family Restaurant for traditional rice and curry
- Anuradhapura: Milano Tourist Rest, Casserole Restaurant and Little Paradise for tourist-friendly meals and vegetarian options
- Habarana (gateway stop): hotel restaurants and Curry and Rice Habarana for safari-day lunches
- New Town markets in both cities for hoppers, kottu roti, king coconut and short eats
Gyms and fitness
- Hotel gyms in Anuradhapura (Rajarata Hotel, Heritage Hotel) and Polonnaruwa/Habarana resort gyms offer day passes when staying nearby
- Public jogging and cycling: Tissa Wewa and Nuwara Wewa bunds in Anuradhapura and the Parakrama Samudra bund in Polonnaruwa at dawn
- No international chain gyms in the province; fitness-focused travellers usually train at hotel gyms or join safari cycling tours
Best views
- Mihintale summit at sunset over the Anuradhapura plains
- Ritigala mountain forest trail and upper viewpoint
- Parakrama Samudra bund at golden hour with birdlife
- Dimbulagala dagoba terrace over the eastern plains
- Tissa Wewa bund at dawn with Isurumuniya silhouettes
