Scams to avoid

Tuk-tuk and van overcharging on fixed tourist loops (Delft/Nainativu jetty runs, Talaimannar, Elephant Pass stops): agree the full price and waiting time before boarding
Unlicensed 'guides' at temples, forts and memorials demanding inflated fees: use guesthouse-recommended guides and confirm the fee first
Boat and jeep price inflation for island ferries and birding trips: public ferries to Delft and Nainativu are cheap, so question any high 'ferry ticket' quote from touts
Money-changing and card-skimming risk is low but ATMs are sparse outside Jaffna town: carry cash and count change at market stalls

Jaffna crab curry and odiyal kool: order at Green Grass Hotel Restaurant, Chola Samraj or lagoon-side seafood stalls; ask the price per crab before ordering
Jaffna Central Market and town bakeries: palmyrah jaggery, mango curry, vadai and short eats for breakfast
Mannar town: Muslim-quarter biryani shops and lagoon crab stalls; small bakeries near the bus stand for fish buns and tea
Vavuniya town: market eateries and main-road rice-and-curry shops, a good cheap lunch stop on the A9 between Anuradhapura and Jaffna

Jaffna town hotel gyms (Jetwing Jaffna, North Gate by Jaffna Heritage) sell day passes when occupancy allows; call ahead
Jaffna Durayappah Stadium and Jaffna University grounds: morning jogging and pickup football with locals
Beach running at Casuarina and yoga on hotel lawns; no dedicated tourist yoga studios, so bring a mat
Mannar, Vavuniya and Mullaitivu: small local gyms in town centres (monthly-fee halls); tourists usually use hotel treadmills or lagoon-bund walks instead
