Batticaloa — Batticaloa Travel Guide

Why go
Batticaloa is the east coast's quiet town — a lagoon city of bridges, a small Dutch Fort, and a lighthouse, with the famous calm of Pasikuda Bay a short ride north. It works as a two-day base: lagoon and town on day one, beach day on day two. Come April to September, when the east coast sea is flat; the town itself moves slowly in the best way.
Best for
Lagoon base done right: boat rides and bridges, the Dutch Fort, the lighthouse, and Pasikuda beach days
Lagoon, bridges and the singing fish
The Batticaloa Lagoon defines the town — boat rides cross bird-rich water to villages and temples, and the Kallady Bridge (plus its newer running parallel) frames the classic lagoon photograph. Local legend says the lagoon sings on full-moon nights; file it as folklore, enjoy the boat ride anyway. Mornings are calmest on the water.
Fort, lighthouse and old town
Batticaloa Fort, a small 17th-century Dutch fort on Puliyanthivu island, anchors the old town — walk the walls, then the lighthouse and the market streets nearby. Kokkadicholai's Thanthondreeswarar temple, south of town, rewards the temple-inclined with gopuram colour and few crowds. The three make one unhurried town day.
Pasikuda and Kalkudah beach day
Pasikuda Bay's shallow curve is the east coast's calmest swim — wade out hundreds of metres in calm months, with Kalkudah's quieter strip just south. Both sit about 30 km north of town: tuk-tuk for the committed, van or car for comfort. Pack reef-safe sunscreen and confirm the sea state locally; calm is seasonal, roughly April to September.
Getting there
Buses connect Batticaloa with Colombo, Kandy and Trincomalee — confirm times locally, schedules shift. The railway reaches town from Colombo via Maho junction (slow but scenic; book reserved seats in season). Within town, tuk-tuks cover the fort and bridges; hire transport for Pasikuda days.
Good to know
Batticaloa District, Eastern Province. Pair this stop with nearby places in the directory or find it pinned on the map.
Watch outs
Prices, hours and access rules change — confirm locally and treat anything undated as a lead, not a promise. Common island-wide traps (overcharging, steering, ticket games) are listed on the directory. The east coast off-season sea turns rough — swim only in calm months where locals swim.

Culture to know before you go
Bargain with a smile and be ready to walk away. Keep small notes — nobody has change. Ask before photographing stall owners.
