Jaffna — Jaffna Travel Guide

Why go
Jaffna is the island's other cultural capital — Tamil, Hindu, coastal, and unlike anywhere south of Anuradhapura. It works as a three-day base: the city (Nallur temple, Fort, Library) on day one, an island day (Delft wild horses or Nainativu temples) on day two, and the far north (Keeramalai springs, Point Pedro, Casuarina beach) on day three. Come for the August Nallur festival if dates align; come any dry month for the food.
Best for
Northern base done right: Nallur festival temple, the Fort and Library, Delft and Nainativu islands, and Jaffna crab curry
Nallur, the Fort and the Library
Nallur Kandaswamy is the north's great Hindu temple — gopuram towers, a golden chariot festival each August, and strict dress rules (men remove shirts inside; everyone dresses covered). Pair it with Jaffna Fort on the lagoon (Portuguese walls, Dutch church ruins, sunset ramparts) and the rebuilt Public Library, a landmark of cultural recovery. The three sit within easy tuk-tuk range and make one full city day.
Islands: Delft and Nainativu
Delft (Neduntheevu) is the wild one — feral horses, coral walls, and the footprint legend, reached by public ferry; go early and carry everything, facilities are thin. Nainativu is the sacred one — the Nagapooshani Amman kovil and the Buddhist Nagadeepa Purana Vihara share one small island, reached by a short boat hop. Pick one per day; both deserve unhurried mornings.

The far north: springs, cape and beach
Keeramalai's springs (men's and women's bathing tanks beside the Naguleswaram temple) pair with the coast road north to Point Pedro and Sakkotai Cape, the island's top-right corner. Casuarina Beach on Karainagar island is the north's calmest swim — shallow, shaded, and nearly empty on weekdays. Finish with Jaffna crab curry and dosas in town; restaurant names change, the cuisine does not.
Getting there
Trains connect Colombo Fort with Jaffna (book reserved seats early in season), and long-distance buses run day and night — confirm times locally, schedules shift. Within the peninsula, tuk-tuks cover the city; hire a van or car for Delft ferry connections and far-north days. The islands need their own mornings — do not stack both in one day.
Good to know
Jaffna District, Northern Province. Pair this stop with nearby places in the directory or find it pinned on the map.
Watch outs
Prices, hours and access rules change — confirm locally and treat anything undated as a lead, not a promise. Common island-wide traps (overcharging, steering, ticket games) are listed on the directory. August festival crowds book the town out — reserve months ahead or come the week after.

Things to do
- Walk markets in the morning when produce and gossip are fresh
- Fix tuk-tuk prices before boarding, or use a metered app
- Visit one museum to anchor the city's story
- End the day at a public sunset spot (Galle Face, lake, rampart)
Cost breakdown
City buses LKR 50–200, tuk-tuks LKR 150–300/km (agree upfront), museum tickets a few hundred LKR (Oct 2026 typicals — confirm locally).
Dress code
Strict: cover shoulders AND knees, no hats, no sleeveless, no shorts. Sarongs are often rentable at the gate.
Culture to know before you go
Bargain with a smile and be ready to walk away. Keep small notes — nobody has change. Ask before photographing stall owners.
Costs are island-typical ranges (October 2026), not promises — confirm locally. Etiquette notes follow the place type (City & Market).
