Cover photo: Dimath Dayananda (Unsplash)
Why go
Rocky hill about 12 km east of Anuradhapura where Mahinda met King Devanampiyatissa. Climb late afternoon for sunset over the plains; the Poson festival (June) draws huge crowds. Small entrance fee separate from the Sacred City ticket; carry water and cover shoulders and knees.
Best for
View seekers and pilgrims; climb 1,840 steps to the cradle of Sri Lankan Buddhism
Good to know
Anuradhapura District, North Central Province. Pair this stop with nearby places in the directory or find it pinned on the map.
Watch outs
Prices, hours and access rules change — confirm locally and treat anything undated as a lead, not a promise. Common island-wide traps (overcharging, steering, ticket games) are listed on its destination page.

Things to do
- Visit at puja (offering) times for full atmosphere
- Walk the premises clockwise with devotees
- Leave a small donation in the box, not in a monk's hand
- Sit and observe before photographing anything
Cost breakdown
Entry is usually free or a small ticket (a few hundred LKR); shoe/bag storage a small fee. Never pay a self-declared 'guide' who grabs you at the gate.
Dress code
Strict: cover shoulders AND knees, no hats, no sleeveless, no shorts. Sarongs are often rentable at the gate.
Culture to know before you go
Remove shoes AND hats before entering. Never pose with your back to a Buddha statue. Point feet away from shrines when sitting. Ask before photographing monks or worshippers.
Costs are island-typical ranges (October 2026), not promises — confirm locally. Etiquette notes follow the place type (Temple & Sacred).
Places: anuradhapura, north-central
