Sri Lanka Surf Seasons Guide: Two Coasts, All Year — Southern Travel Guide

Why go
Sri Lanka is one of the few places with rideable surf every month of the year — the two coasts simply swap seasons. Winter belongs to the south-west, summer to Arugam Bay, and the water never drops below boardshorts. Pick the wrong coast for your dates and you will watch flat water; pick right and you will surf uncrowded warm waves for weeks.
Best for
Rideable waves every month: south-west winter walls, east-coast summers, beginner bays and lesson prices
South and west: November to April
| | South-West | East Coast | | Season | Oct/Nov–Apr | May–Sep/Oct | | Centre | Weligama | Arugam Bay | | Learner spot | Weligama Bay | Baby Point | | Expert spot | Unawatuna Bay | Okanda |
Weligama Bay is one of Asia's best learn-to-surf beaches — two kilometres of sandy bottom, no reef, no strong currents, group lessons from around US$15. Around it sit Midigama, Ahangama and Hiriketiya for intermediates, Hikkaduwa for beach-break variety. January to March runs most consistent; November and late April surf but less predictably.

East coast: May to September
Arugam Bay is a top-ten world surf town: long right-hand point breaks for intermediates up, Baby Point's gentle rollers for first-timers, surf camps charging similar $15–25 lesson rates to the south. June to September peaks; May and October are the shoulder sweet spots with thinner crowds. Off-season the town sleeps — check what is open before booking remote months.

What lessons and boards cost
Group lessons run roughly US$15–25 an hour on both coasts, private coaching double; board rental a few dollars a day, cheaper by the week. Reef booties matter on reef breaks, rash guards everywhere — equatorial sun plus salt water burns fast. Swim fitness first: Weligama's ease still demands paddling stamina.
Getting there
Surf towns pair with beach bases — compare bays in Mirissa vs Weligama, read the whale season overlap in Mirissa honestly, and build the trip in the directory.
Good to know
Two-coast guide, no single pin. Pair breaks with beaches in the directory or find surf towns pinned on the map.
Watch outs
Prices, hours and access rules change — confirm locally and treat anything undated as a lead, not a promise. Common island-wide traps (overcharging, steering, ticket games) are listed on the directory.

Things to do
- Book a lesson before renting — reef and rip currents punish guesswork
- Surf early morning for cleanest waves and fewer crowds
- Check board condition and leash before paying
- Rest a day between first sessions; shoulders will thank you
Cost breakdown
Lessons roughly LKR 4,000–8,000 including board (Oct 2026 typicals — confirm locally). Rentals LKR 1,000–2,500/hr. Reef booties sometimes extra.
Culture to know before you go
Respect the lineup: locals and instructors get priority. Never drop in. Apologise loudly when you mess up — it goes far.
Costs are island-typical ranges (October 2026), not promises — confirm locally. Etiquette notes follow the place type (Surf).
