About this place
Tea-country base at 1,868m: a Tudor-postbox colonial town wrapped in estates, with factory tours, lake boats and the island's great dawn hike — Horton Plains and World's End — 30 minutes away. Two days covers it; the Nanu Oya rail link makes arrival easy.
Visitor brief
Good to know before you go
- Two days does it: town plus Pedro and Gregory Lake, then Horton Plains at dawn.
- Horton means leaving town around 5am; mist often closes World's End by mid-morning.
- December to April brings the clearest Plains mornings; pack a fleece year-round.
- Arrive via Nanu Oya station then bus or tuk up the hill.
How to travel there
In Nuwara Eliya District, Central Province. Nanu Oya station on the Colombo–Badulla line then 20–30 minutes up by bus or tuk, or by road from Kandy through the tea country. Walk the town centre; tuk-tuks for Pedro, Gregory Lake and the gardens.
Where to stay

Scams to watch for
- Tuk-tuks quoting the Horton trip without the park entry and van transfers broken out; agree the full package in writing.
- Factory-tour shops pricing teas far above town supermarkets; compare before buying.
