Why go

Sri Lanka's highest town (around 1,868m) is a different country from the coast: misty mornings, Tudor post boxes, rose gardens and tea estates folding over every ridge. It works as a two-day base: town sights and tea on day one, Horton Plains at dawn on day two. Come December to April for the clearest Horton mornings; the rest of the year the mist is the attraction. Pack a fleece — nights drop cold whatever the coast is doing.

The town walk

Start at the Tudor-style Old Post Office, then loop Victoria Park for hill-country birds and flowerbeds, past the Grand Hotel's lawns and the racecourse to the single-tree viewpoints. The town centre is compact and walkable; tuk-tuks cover the outlying gardens like Hakgala, about 10km toward Badulla.

Pedro tea and Gregory Lake

Pedro estate runs factory tours with tastings a few kilometres east of town — go in the morning when plucking is on and the mist lifts. Afternoons belong to Lake Gregory: pedal boats and pony rides on the water, tea hills behind, and a breezy promenade for the sunset walk. Both are half-day stops; neither needs a full day.

Horton Plains at dawn

The Plains and World's End demand the earliest start you will make in Sri Lanka: leave town around 5am for the 9km loop trail, reach World's End before the mist closes it (often by 9–10am), and continue past Baker's Falls. The patana grassland looks empty and rewards patience — sambar, purple-faced langurs and macaque troops work the forest edge while you walk.

Moon Plains and Seetha Amman

With a second spare morning, Moon Plains gives the single-tree-hill panorama without Horton's 5am alarm, and Seetha Amman temple on the Hakgala road covers the Ramayana stop. Both pair with the Hakgala gardens as one easy 10km loop by tuk.

Where to stay

Town guesthouses around the centre suit rail-and-bus arrivals on foot; tea bungalows on the estates cost more and earn it with fireplaces and garden breakfasts. Horton mornings start before any hotel breakfast — arrange a packed one the night before, whatever you pay for the room.

Getting there

Most travellers arrive via Nanu Oya station (the Colombo–Badulla line) then a 20–30 minute bus or tuk up the hill, or by road from Kandy through the tea country. Within town, walk the centre and hire tuk-tuks for Pedro, Gregory and the gardens — agree the half-day rate before setting off.

Good to know

Nuwara Eliya District, Central Province. Pair this stop with nearby places in the directory or find it pinned on the map.

Watch outs

Prices, hours and access rules change — confirm locally and treat anything undated as a lead, not a promise. Common island-wide traps (overcharging, steering, ticket games) are listed on the directory. Horton mist waits for nobody — if the viewpoint is your dream, take the earliest transport, not the cheapest.

Things to do

Cost breakdown

City buses LKR 50–200, tuk-tuks LKR 150–300/km (agree upfront), museum tickets a few hundred LKR (Oct 2026 typicals — confirm locally).

Culture to know before you go

Bargain with a smile and be ready to walk away. Keep small notes — nobody has change. Ask before photographing stall owners.

Costs are island-typical ranges (October 2026), not promises — confirm locally. Etiquette notes follow the place type (City & Market).
