Ratnapura, the City of Gems, sits over alluvial gravels yielding sapphires, rubies, cat's-eye and alexandrite. Good to know before you go

- Mines are muddy open pits - wear sturdy shoes you can dirty; visits are best in dry morning hours.
- Start at the museum for grading basics so you can judge what sellers show you.
