7 Days Down South
Cover photo: Vika Glitter (Pexels)
The shape: two bases, one week
Matara (days 1–3) for real town life and day trips, Mirissa or Weligama (days 4–5) for surf and sunsets, Tangalle (days 6–7) for calm — or fold Galle Fort in as the day trip home. Two check-ins beat seven; travel time eats trips.

Days 1–3: Matara and Polhena
Base Matara: a working southern city, not a resort — which is exactly why it works. Evenings inside Matara Fort, mornings at the fish market, and the small star-shaped Dutch Star Fort (1760s, an hour at most, often nearly empty).

Give Polhena a full day: the reef makes a calm lagoon for swimming and snorkelling, and turtles surface most mornings — bring reef shoes for the coral patches and go on a weekday if you can, because Sundays belong to local families (which is also when it's most fun). Nearby Madiha is the quieter backup, and Parevi Duwa's little island temple is worth the causeway walk at sunset.
Eat at local prices all three days — Matara's rice-and-curry shops and hopper stalls run half of Mirissa's rates. Day-trip Weligama for a first surf lesson (beginner bay, season November–April per TaxiGo 2026).
Days 4–5: Mirissa energy
Move down the coast to Mirissa or Weligama. The routine that works: sunrise beach walk, surf lesson mid-morning at Weligama's beginner bay (board hire and instructors line the beach road — agree the lesson length and board time before paying), Coconut Tree Hill for golden hour (go at dawn, not sunset, if you want it empty), Parrot Rock at low tide.

Whales only in season (November–April; see our honest whale guide) — book the harbour boat a day ahead, take seasickness pills even if you "never get sick", and treat a blue whale as luck, not promise. If peak crowds bite, sleep Weligama and sunset in Mirissa — the stay decision guide explains the trade.

Days 6–7: Tangalle calm and Galle Fort home
Tangalle is the exhale: Goyambokka's palm-backed curve for swimming, Silent Beach next door for the quietest water on this itinerary, and the lagoon light at dusk.

Two half-days cover the extras: Rekawa turtle beach at night (guided tour, red lights only, no flash — the guides enforce it), Mulkirigala rock temple (500+ steps with rest platforms, murals and the valley view), Hummanaya blowhole on a rough-sea day, and Dondra lighthouse — the island's southernmost point — for the photo.
Then Galle Fort ramparts on the way back (one-day plan): lighthouse, Dutch church, sunset on the walls, dinner on Pedlar Street. Arrive south by train or expressway bus; leave the same way with one buffer day before flights.
Budget shape (structure, not prices)
Sleep is the lever: Matara nights cost less than Mirissa peak nights. Moving leaks second (unagreed fares, private cars for walkable hops). Doing leaks third (steered shops, shortened boats). Keep the mistakes list open on your phone all week — and the full cost ranges in Down South Costs.
Places: matara, mirissa, tangalle
Keep exploring
