The short answer

Stay in Weligama to learn surf, Mirissa for energy and sunsets, Tangalle for calm, and day-trip the rest. Beaches below are judged for swimmers, surfers, and sleepers separately — because ranking without asking what you want is how trips disappoint.

1. Weligama Bay — best to learn surf

A long sandy bay with forgiving waves, lessons and rentals along the beach road. Stay here if surfing is the trip and you're starting out; south season runs roughly November to April (TaxiGo 2026). Skip the postcard hunt — this is a working surf town valued for water time. Compare with Mirissa vs Weligama before you book.

2. Mirissa — best for energy

Crescent bay, Coconut Tree Hill sunsets, whale boats at dawn (season roughly November–April, peak December–March per Catch Ceylon). At peak the main beach crowds fast; walk to quieter ends mornings and read our full Mirissa guide.

3. Tangalle area — best for calm

Quieter coves east of Matara where days slow down. Swim only in protected spots and follow local advice — the southwest monsoon (roughly May–September, per Holidify and Tangalle beaches) makes open water rough off-season.

4. Hiriketiya — best small bay

A tight horseshoe with two different breaks: a sheltered sandy beach break for beginners and intermediates, and a left-hand reef for advanced surfers (reef booties strongly advised, helmets no joke). WeWave monthly scoring puts nearby south points at their best January to March (WeWave); swimming inside the bay stays safe most of the year. Go early, respect the lineup, accept the peak crowd trade — and skip early January, when local holidays pack the whole coast.

5. Polhena — best local swim

Reef lagoon near Matara where families swim, turtles often reported. Protect the reef, check currents, pair with Matara town for real food at real prices.

Honourable mention: Unawatuna

Just west of Galle and often left out of south-coast rankings: a calm reef bay that's the easiest swimming on this list, with turtles most mornings and Galle Fort fifteen minutes away. Better for families than Mirissa, less scenic than Tangalle — the sensible middle.

The skip (at peak): the famous sunset crush

The most photographed sunset point earns its crowd. At peak, go at sunrise or accept the crush knowingly; a lesser headland at golden hour gives the same sky with room.

Read the water before you swim

No beach on this list has lifeguards as a rule. Swim where flags, fishermen and families swim; skip open water May–September on the southwest coast; watch for rips after rain; reef booties for coral entries; never swim at night. Turtle beaches (Polhena, Unawatuna, Dalawella) reward mornings — turtles feed early and the water is clearest then.
