Who this is for

Travelling alone, sleeping in dorms, moving by train and bus. You'll never be lonely on this route — Ella and Mirissa run on solo travellers meeting each other.

The route

Places to snap pictures

Landmarks you'll actually remember

Sigiriya rock, the Temple of the Tooth, Nine Arches, Yala's wilderness, Galle lighthouse. The train between them is arguably the sixth landmark.

Fun things to do

Surf camp weeks in Weligama (cheapest way to learn), safari seat-splits from Tissa hostels, Ella's flying Ravana zipline, cooking classes, whale watching in season, the famous Ella bar crawl.

Favourites solo travellers name

The surf camp crew by week two, the Kandy–Ella train, and safari mornings. Most people extend Ella — budget two spare days for exactly that.

Cost shape

Dorms ($8–15), rice and curry ($2–4), trains (pennies), surf camp packages ($200–300/week with board and bed). The safari is the splurge — split a jeep with six and it's $30–40 each. Book the Kandy→Ella reserved seats days ahead or queue early for unreserved carriages.

When to go

Follow the seasons, not the calendar: south, west and hills November–April; east coast (Arugam Bay) May–September. Shoulder months mean cheaper dorms and emptier surf lineups. Monsoon doesn't mean nonstop rain — it means dramatic afternoons and rough seas on the wrong coast.

Getting around

Trains for the scenic legs (unreserved carriages are cheapest — board early), red express buses for everything else, PickMe inside towns. Night buses on long hauls save a night's accommodation. Never pay more than the metered/reasonable fare twice — learn the price of your regular routes on day one.

Where to stay

Dorms in Kandy, Ella (book two nights, extend to five like everyone does), surf camps in Weligama, social hostels in Mirissa, one Fort night in Galle. Read recent reviews, not ratings — a 8.9 with "great vibe" beats a 9.4 that's silent.

What to eat on this route

Rice and curry packets ($2–4), kottu nights, bakery short eats for bus days, hoppers for breakfast. Hostel kitchens in Ella and Mirissa cut costs further. Fruit from markets, not beach vendors.

Budget: actual numbers

$30–55/day all-in covers dorms, local food, buses and trains. Two splurges: the safari split ($30–40) and whales in season ($30–50). A beer is $2–3; arrack is cheaper and stronger than you expect.

Packing for this trip

40 litres maximum. Padlock for dorm lockers, dry bag for boat trips and monsoon bursts, flip-flops plus one pair of trail shoes, sarong (temple, beach, blanket), headtorch. Leave the jeans — they never dry.

Book before you fly

Almost nothing: your first hostel and the Kandy→Ella seats. Flexibility is the backpacker's edge — keep it.

Stay safe & healthy

Travel insurance is non-negotiable (scooter exclusions matter — see below). Share your itinerary with someone home. Repellent at dawn/dusk. Currents kill more travellers than anything else here — swim where flags and fishermen swim. And the classic backpacker mistake: renting a scooter on a car licence with no insurance. If you crash, you pay everything and the police keep your passport until you do.
