Who this is for

Three to six friends, equal parts surf, safari and going out. Split everything — vans, jeeps, villas — and this trip costs barely more than solo backpacking.

The route

Places to snap pictures

Landmarks you'll actually remember

Nine Arches, Yala wilderness, Galle lighthouse. This trip is about the crew, not the monuments — the landmarks are backdrops.

Fun things to do

Surf lessons together (group discounts exist — ask), safari seat-splits, Ella zipline and bar street, whale watching in season, stilt-fishermen viewpoints, Mirissa harbour-side live music.

Favourites groups name

The safari morning, the first green wave someone actually rides, and Ella nights. Assign one person as treasurer on day one — group money arguments ruin more trips than rain does.

Cost shape

A van + driver split 4–6 ways costs little more per head than buses with none of the waiting. Villas with pools near Weligama and Mirissa split well. Safari jeeps (~$100–150) become cheap divided. Nights out are inexpensive until imported spirits enter the picture — stick to Lion lager and arrack like everyone else.

When to go

November–April for this south-coast version. If the crew can only travel mid-year, flip it east: Arugam Bay surf, Trincomalee beaches, same energy. Shoulder months (October, May) thin the crowds and the prices.

Getting around

Hire a van + driver for the full eight days and split it — roughly the cost of buses per head with door-to-door convenience and a boot big enough for six boards. Surf shuttles and night tuk-tuks via PickMe.

Where to stay

Villas, not hotels: 3–4 bedroom pool villas near Weligama and Mirissa split beautifully, with kitchens for breakfasts and someone always on aux. In Ella, book a group hostel's private rooms or one big guesthouse floor.

What to eat on this route

Harbour seafood BBQs (buy by the kilo at Mirissa harbour, grill at the villa), kottu challenges, bakery breakfasts, Ella's late-night roti spots. Assign cooking pairs — it halves food costs and doubles the stories.

Budget: actual numbers

Roughly $40–80 per person per day: villa shares $15–30, food $10–20, van split $10–15, activities divided. Imported spirits and beach-club cocktails are the budget killers — pre-drink at the villa.

Packing for this trip

Bluetooth speaker (respect villa quiet hours and neighbours), cards and beach games, one group first-aid kit (reef cuts happen), reef shoes, and the treasurer's notebook — physical or app, but decided on day one.

Book before you fly

The villas (good ones go months ahead in season), one safari jeep (seats six — perfect), the whale boat as a group. Everything else flexes.

Stay safe as a group

Swim only flagged stretches — southern currents don't care how strong a swimmer you are. Pace the arrack; it's smoother than it is weak. Keep one person sober-ish for night returns. Valuables in the villa safe, not in six different backpacks. And agree the money rules before the first bill, not after the third night out.
