Colombo in Two Days

Why two days
Colombo earns two days: one for the old commercial city, one for temples, museums and the seafront. Only have one evening? Skip to Galle Face at 5pm and dinner — the city in miniature. Arrive by the airport expressway (30–40 minutes downtown), sleep central, and leave with the island's history sorted before the beaches begin.
Landing: the first hour
| Move | Detail |
|---|---|
| Airport → city | PickMe/Uber LKR 2,500–3,500 (45–60 min); official taxi desk LKR 3,000–4,000; bus 187 to Fort LKR 120 (1.5–2 h, light bags only) |
| SIM | Dialog or Mobitel in the arrivals hall, before the taxi queue |
| Tourist police | 1912, if anything goes wrong |
Day one: Fort, Pettah and sunset
Start at Colombo Fort station and walk the colonial grid — the old lighthouse clock tower, the red-brick Cargills department store, the Dutch Hospital precinct turned cafe row. Then cross into Pettah: Sea Street for gold, Main Street for textiles, Manning Market for fruit and veg, mornings least crowded. Pettah exists to work, not to pose — bargaining expected, pickpocket risk ordinary-big-city, bags zipped and in front. The candy-striped Jami Ul-Alfar (Red Mosque, 1908–09) rises over Second Cross Street: photograph the exterior outside prayer hours; tours treat it as a drive-by, not a visit.

Ride late afternoon to Galle Face Green: twelve acres of oceanfront lawn since 1859, liveliest 4–7pm when families fly kites and crowd the promenade wall. Eat from the carts — isso wade (prawn fritters), roast corn, king coconut from ~5pm. Then watch the sun drop behind the Port City works. This is a strolling promenade, not a swim beach.

Day two: temples, museum, lake and tower
Morning at Gangaramaya and Seema Malaka: temple halls plus museum (part temple, part museum, part community centre — not a quiet sanctuary), then the blue-tiled lake pavilion. Shoulders covered, shoes off, ask before photographing inside; the foreign-visitor ticket runs cheap (reported ~USD 1.50). Pair it with the National Museum next to Viharamahadevi Park — Kandyan regalia and masks in an 1877 palace, roughly Tuesday–Sunday 9am–5pm, allow two hours.

Evening options, honestly ranked:
| Option | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Lotus Tower | South Asia's tallest structure — but a ~USD 23 ticket for 30–45 min; photo stop unless skylines thrill you |
| Port City promenade | Free waterfront walk beside Galle Face |
| Mount Lavinia beach | Train down for a swim and seafood dinner |
Got a third morning? Kelaniya temple runs 20 minutes out by tuk.
Where to stay
| Zone | Suits |
|---|---|
| Fort / Kollupitiya | Transport convenience — station, expressway buses, seafront on foot |
| Bambalapitiya / Wellawatte | Lower rates and local food streets for a short train or tuk ride |
| Mount Lavinia | Final beach night before an afternoon flight |
Confirm the room's distance from bars and main roads if you sleep light.
Where to eat
Eat where office crowds eat: hopper stalls and rice-and-curry shops around Fort and Pettah at lunch, the Dutch Hospital precinct for one slower dinner, Galle Face carts at sunset. Mornings pair well with a bakery breakfast — seeni sambol buns and fish rolls — before the museum run.
Getting in and out
The Katunayake Expressway puts the airport 30–40 minutes from downtown; the Southern Expressway (E01) starts here for the south coast. Fort station anchors trains and long-distance buses — see Colombo to Down South and the train + bus master guide for the full comparison, and the arrival guide plus money guide for SIMs, cash and first-hour orientation.
