Why go

Kandy is Sri Lanka's hill capital and its cultural heart — a lakeside city built around the Temple of the Tooth, ringed by forested hills, with botanical gardens and viewpoints a short ride away. It is the natural overnight between Colombo and the hill country, and the starting point of the famous train to Ella. One full day covers the essentials; two lets the city breathe.

Best for

Culture-first travellers; the Tooth Temple, the lake walk and garden day-trips in the hill capital

Temple of the Tooth

The Sri Dalada Maligawa holds the Tooth Relic and anchors the whole city — go for the evening puja ceremony with drummers when the temple is at its most alive. Dress code is enforced: shoulders and knees covered, shoes off at the gate, no hats inside. Bags are screened; the forecourt crowds peak on Poya full-moon days.

The lake and the viewpoints

Kandy Lake sits right beside the temple — the full shaded circuit takes about an hour on foot and suits sunrise or late afternoon. The colonnaded building on the water is the classic photo stop.

For the panorama, head up to the viewpoint (Arthur's Seat) or the Bahirawakanda Big Buddha above town, both easy tuk-tuk rides. An evening cultural dance show rounds off the same day as the temple — book through your guesthouse.

Day-trips: Peradeniya and around

The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya, 20 minutes out, fills a whole easy morning — giant palms, orchid houses and flying foxes. Pair it with a tea factory stop or the Udawatta Kele forest walk behind the temple for a second slow day.

Time it right and the Esala Perahera in July/August turns the city into a ten-night torch-lit procession — book beds months ahead, or enjoy Kandy crowd-free in any other month.

Getting there

Kandy is about 2.5–3 hours from Colombo by the scenic train, intercity bus or taxi; the railway station sits below the lake, walkable to most guesthouses. Onward trains to Nanu Oya and Ella leave in the morning — reserve seats early in season.

Good to know

Kandy District, Central Province. Pair this stop with nearby places in the directory or find it pinned on the map.

Watch outs

Prices, hours and access rules change — confirm locally and treat anything undated as a lead, not a promise. Common island-wide traps (overcharging, steering, ticket games) are listed on the directory.
