Sri Lanka Dive + Snorkel Guide: Reefs, Wrecks and Turtles — Southern Travel Guide

Why go

Sri Lanka's underwater half is underrated: shallow turtle reefs a fin-kick from shore, a British-era wreck, the island's biggest reef with mantas — split across two coasts so something is always in season. Snorkellers get the best deal of all: the top turtle encounters need no tank.

Best for

Two-coast underwater calendar: Hikkaduwa turtles, Pigeon sharks, Bar Reef mantas and wreck dives

| | South-West | East | | Season | Nov–Apr | May–Oct | | Headline | Turtles + wrecks | Sharks + coral | | Base | Hikkaduwa | Trincomalee |

Hikkaduwa and the south-west

The house reef starts steps off the sand — parrotfish, angelfish, clownfish and the big green turtles that made the town famous — with deeper coral gardens, moray eels and the Galle shipwreck for certified divers. November to April brings calm seas and the best visibility; Unawatuna, Mirissa and Weligama add snorkel variety on the same coast.

Pigeon Island and the east

May to October the east takes over: Pigeon Island's shallow reef packs blacktip reef sharks, turtles and the healthiest coral in the country, reachable from Nilaveli and Trincomalee dive shops. Bar Reef near Kalpitiya is the expedition — the island's largest reef, longer boat ride, manta and whale-shark season rewards around December to March.

Courses, costs and conduct

Open-water courses run at Hikkaduwa and Trincomalee shops through the respective seasons; fun dives price by depth and boat time — confirm park fees (Pigeon Island charges entry) before comparing quotes. Conduct matters more here than anywhere: never touch coral or turtles, keep distance, take nothing. The reef you kick today is next year's dead zone.

Getting there

Pair reef days with beach bases in the directory, check whale-season overlap in Mirissa honestly, and read surf timing in the surf guide — same seas, different sport.

Good to know

Two-coast guide, no single pin. Pair reefs with beaches in the directory or find dive towns pinned on the map.

Watch outs

Prices, hours and access rules change — confirm locally and treat anything undated as a lead, not a promise. Common island-wide traps (overcharging, steering, ticket games) are listed on the directory.

Things to do

Cost breakdown

Two-tank fun dives roughly USD 60–90 with gear; snorkel trips LKR 3,000–6,000 (Oct 2026 typicals — confirm locally).

Culture to know before you go

Never touch coral or turtles — fines and fury both apply. Keep distance from fishing nets and boats.

Costs are island-typical ranges (October 2026), not promises — confirm locally. Etiquette notes follow the place type (Dive & Snorkel).
