Sri Lanka Packing List: Coast, Hills, Temples and Tech — Western Travel Guide

Why go
Sri Lanka punishes two suitcases: the overdressed (jeans in 32°C humidity) and the underdressed (turned away at temple gates in shorts). One island spans beach heat, hill-country chill and strict dress codes — pack for all three in a carry-on and buy the rest cheaply there.
Best for
Pack once, right: light layers, temple-ready cover, reef-safe sun, power and papers for the whole island
Clothes: light, loose, layered

Breathable everything: linen and quick-dry beat cotton. Swimwear plus a rash guard for sun and reefs. One light fleece or shawl — Nuwara Eliya evenings drop toward 10°C. Sarong (buys anywhere, doubles as temple cover, beach towel and blanket). Sturdy sandals plus closed walking shoes for forts and forest paths. Laundry is cheap and fast in tourist towns, so pack half the outfits you think you need.
Temples and health kit
Shoulders and knees covered for every temple, mosque and church — no hats inside, shoes off at the gate (socks save your soles on hot stone). Health kit per the health guide: ORS, Imodium, paracetamol, antihistamines, plasters, antiseptic, tweezers, prescriptions in original packaging. Reef-safe sunscreen, lip balm, DEET repellent, hand sanitizer.

Tech, power and papers
Universal adapter (D/M/G sockets) plus a small power strip; power bank for cut-prone evenings; offline maps downloaded. Passport plus a photo of it elsewhere; ETA printout; insurance policy physical and digital; licence plus endorsement if driving. Dry pouch for the lot — checkpoints, boats and downpours all respect dry papers.
Getting there
Bus fares and haggling you already know from the train + bus guide and money guide; kit details live in health. Buy forgotten items at supermarkets and Laksala, not tourist shops.
Good to know
Island-wide guide, no single pin. Pair packing with plans in the directory or find outfitter towns pinned on the map.
Watch outs
Prices, hours and access rules change — confirm locally and treat anything undated as a lead, not a promise. Common island-wide traps (overcharging, steering, ticket games) are listed on the directory.

Things to do
- Save emergency numbers and your insurer's line in your phone first
- Break large notes at supermarkets; keep small rupees on you
- Check whether the 10% service charge reaches staff before tipping extra
- Download offline maps and a power bank before long travel days
Cost breakdown
ATMs everywhere but large notes are hard to change; drivers LKR 500–3,000/day, porters 200–300 a bag (Oct 2026 typicals — confirm locally).
Dress code
Strict: cover shoulders AND knees, no hats, no sleeveless, no shorts. Sarongs are often rentable at the gate.
Culture to know before you go
Bargain with a smile and walk away kindly. Keep papers dry and on you at checkpoints.
Costs are island-typical ranges (October 2026), not promises — confirm locally. Etiquette notes follow the place type (Essentials).
