Sri Lanka Pre-Trip Countdown: 30, 7, 1 Days and Arrival Day — Western Travel Guide

Why go
Most Sri Lanka mishaps are calendar failures, not bad luck: the train window nobody knew, the ETA done at the airport, the insurance bought never. Four checkpoints — 30 days, 7 days, 1 day, arrival day — catch everything before it costs you.
Best for
Nothing forgotten: train windows, ETA, insurance, packing and landing-day moves in one checklist
30 days out: book the constrained
Train seats open exactly 30 days ahead — Kandy–Ella sells out in minutes, so book at window-open per the train guide. Flights and first beds (Kandy during Perahera season, Arugam in August) next. ETA filed online, not at the counter. Insurance with medevac bought and the emergency line saved — see health.

7 days out: pack and confirm
Pack per the packing list: light layers, temple cover, reef-safe sun, adapter, power bank, prescriptions. Confirm festival dates for your weeks in the festival calendar — a Poya shutdown or Perahera changes plans. Screenshot hotel addresses, download offline maps, tell your bank you are travelling.
1 day out: papers and money
Passport, ETA printout, insurance physical plus digital, licence and endorsement if driving — originals plus a photo of each elsewhere. Land with rupees per the money guide: small notes broken, cards as backup. Charge everything; pack a change of clothes in carry-on against lost bags.

Arrival day: SIM, cash, Fort
Land before noon if you want a same-day southbound train. SIM at the airport per the arrival guide, rupees from the exchange, 187 bus or taxi to Fort, PickMe installed before you need it. First sunset at Galle Face or the lake — the trip starts properly there.
Getting there
This checklist points at the full shelf: arrival, health, money, trains, packing. Build the route itself in the directory.
Good to know
Planning guide, no single pin. Pair dates with places in the directory or find starting points pinned on the map.
Watch outs
Prices, hours and access rules change — confirm locally and treat anything undated as a lead, not a promise. Common island-wide traps (overcharging, steering, ticket games) are listed on the directory.

Things to do
- Save emergency numbers and your insurer's line in your phone first
- Break large notes at supermarkets; keep small rupees on you
- Check whether the 10% service charge reaches staff before tipping extra
- Download offline maps and a power bank before long travel days
Cost breakdown
ATMs everywhere but large notes are hard to change; drivers LKR 500–3,000/day, porters 200–300 a bag (Oct 2026 typicals — confirm locally).
Culture to know before you go
Bargain with a smile and walk away kindly. Keep papers dry and on you at checkpoints.
Costs are island-typical ranges (October 2026), not promises — confirm locally. Etiquette notes follow the place type (Essentials).
