Sri Lanka Every-Morning Routine Card: Water, Sun, Cash, Tickets, Dress Code — Western Travel Guide

Why go
Most ruined days in Sri Lanka are not bad luck — they are a forgotten water bottle, a temple turned away, a sold-out train, or an empty wallet at the wrong counter. This card takes five minutes with the morning tea and removes all four. Print it, screenshot it, use it on every trip.
Best for
Any itinerary, any pace: the daily companion to the pre-trip countdown and the 7-day checklists.
Body: water, sun
Drink a full bottle before leaving — heat plus air-conditioning dehydrates silently, and the day's first water is never the one you buy at noon. Two litres per person per day is the baseline; more on safari and hiking days, per the health guide. Roadside thambili (king coconut) counts toward the total and costs small notes. Sunscreen goes on before the shirt, not at the beach: reef-safe, reapplied every two hours, with a hat you will actually wear. The sun here burns through cloud — overcast is not protection.

Wallet: cash, tickets
Count the day's rupees before the first tuk-tuk: small notes for cafés, tips, and temple donations, cards as backup per the money guide. Then check today's bookings — train seats, safari pickup time, whale-boat departure — while hotel wifi is free and fixes are still possible. Screenshots of every reservation live in one phone album, not scattered across apps.
Respect: dress code
Shoulders and knees covered before any temple, mosque, or church door — sarong or long skirt plus a shawl handles every site on the island. Shoes come off at temple entrances (socks help on hot stone), hats come off inside, and swimwear stays at the beach and pool. The rule is simple: if you would not wear it to a wedding, do not wear it to a shrine.
Getting there
This card rides on the full shelf: countdown, 7-day checklists, health, money, trains, packing. Build the route itself in the directory.
Good to know
Planning guide, no single pin. Pair dates with places in the directory or find starting points pinned on the map.
Watch outs
Prices, hours and access rules change — confirm locally and treat anything undated as a lead, not a promise. Common island-wide traps (overcharging, steering, ticket games) are listed on the directory.

Things to do
- Save emergency numbers and your insurer's line in your phone first
- Break large notes at supermarkets; keep small rupees on you
- Check whether the 10% service charge reaches staff before tipping extra
- Download offline maps and a power bank before long travel days
Cost breakdown
ATMs everywhere but large notes are hard to change; drivers LKR 500–3,000/day, porters 200–300 a bag (Oct 2026 typicals — confirm locally).
Culture to know before you go
Bargain with a smile and walk away kindly. Keep papers dry and on you at checkpoints.
Costs are island-typical ranges (October 2026), not promises — confirm locally. Etiquette notes follow the place type (Essentials).
Keep exploring
