30 Days in Sri Lanka: The Full Slow Loop

Who this is for
A month, one bag, no rushing. The travellers who enjoy this most pick two long bases and let the rest flow around them — resist the urge to add everything.
The route
- Days 1–4: Negombo landing → Anuradhapura + Wilpattu.
- Days 5–8: Cultural Triangle: Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa, Minneriya.
- Days 9–11: Kandy + a Knuckles day hike.
- Days 12–14: Nuwara Eliya + Horton Plains, the famous train to Ella.
- Days 15–19: Ella base (5 nights). Day trips: Diyaluma, buduruwagala, tea trails. The month's hinge — rest here.
- Days 20–22: Arugam Bay in season (April–October) or Tangalle. Surf and do nothing.
- Days 23–26: South coast drift: Mirissa → Weligama → Galle.
- Days 27–30: Wildcard — Jaffna and the north if you still have legs (Nallur Kovil, Delft and Nainativu islands, empty beaches), else Bentota to wind down near the airport. Delft runs on the government ferry from Kurikadduwan jetty (~45 minutes by tuk from Jaffna town): roughly 8:30am out, 2pm back, an hour each way — four island hours for the wild horses, Baobab and Dutch fort. Nainativu's temples take a separate 20-minute private boat (Rs. 2,000–5,000 one way); don't try both islands in one ferry day.

Places to snap pictures
- Minneriya gathering (July–October) — the elephant spectacle of the whole trip.
- World's End, Horton Plains — sheer cliff drop at 9am before the mist closes it.
- Diyaluma upper pools — swim on the edge of an 844-foot drop (carefully).
- Nallur Kovil gopuram, Jaffna — gold-on-gold tower, festival colours if you time it.
- Delft Island wild horses — the weirdest half-day in Sri Lanka.
- Coconut Tree Hill at dawn — yes, again. It never disappoints.
Landmarks you'll actually remember
Anuradhapura's stupas, Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa's Buddhas, the Temple of the Tooth, Nine Arches, Nallur Kovil, Galle Fort. Seven wonders in thirty days is about right.
Fun things to do
Knuckles hiking with a village guide, surf progression in Arugam Bay, Jaffna's crab curry and palmyrah everything, Delft day trip by ferry, whale watching from Mirissa, a cooking class in Ella once you're rested enough to care about tempering mustard seeds.
Favourites month-long travellers name
The Ella long base, Jaffna's total difference from the south, and the train. Everyone says the same thing: the month felt short.
Cost shape
A month rewards slow deals — weekly guesthouse rates, cooking sometimes, buses and trains between towns with one or two driver days for awkward legs. Budget travellers do the loop on $35–50/day; comfort on $80–120. The north (Jaffna) is cheaper than the south for the same quality.
When to go
With thirty days you chase both seasons instead of picking one: start south or east depending on your month, cross over mid-trip. December–April favours the classic south-first loop above; May–September flips it (east first, hills, then the south in its green season). Shoulder months cut crowds everywhere.
Visa reality for a month
A standard tourist ETA covers 30 days — count yours carefully against your flight dates, because day 31 without an extension is an overstay. Extensions are routine via the online system or Colombo immigration; apply before your stamp expires, not after. Keep a screenshot of the approval on your phone for checkpoints.
Getting around for a month
Trains and buses carry 80% of this loop. Buy three to four strategic driver days for the awkward legs (Triangle sites, Udawalawe→Ella, south-coast hops). Jaffna: the night train from Colombo is an experience, the bus is faster, and domestic flights are cheap enough to save a full day — worth it once.
Where to stay for a month
Ask for the weekly rate everywhere — 20–30% off nightly is normal for 7+ nights, more for a fortnight. Mix dorm beds (Triangle, Ella) with private rooms (recovery nights). In Ella and Mirissa, walk in and negotiate for week two; online prices assume short stays.
What to eat on this route
Make it a regional tour: Jaffna crab curry, dosa and palmyrah everything up north; east-coast seafood; hill-country rice and curry; southern hoppers and kottu. A month lets you graduate from tourist menus to the shop the driver eats at — say yes whenever it's offered.
Budget: actual numbers
Budget loop: $35–50/day — dorms and guesthouses $12–30, local food $8–15, trains and buses a few dollars a leg, weekly rates shaving 20–30%. Comfort loop: $80–120/day — private rooms $40–70, two or three driver days, safari and whales without flinching. Entries bite in the Triangle (Sigiriya $35, Polonnaruwa $30), so choose paid sites once and enjoy free temples, beaches and viewpoints the rest of the month.
Packing for a month
Pack for one week and wash weekly — every town has 24-hour laundry for a few dollars a bag. The month-long essentials: broken-in shoes, a proper rain shell, reef shoes, sun hat, headtorch, padlock, dry bag, and a small medical kit (rehydration salts, antihistamines, plasters, your prescriptions).
Book before you fly
Almost nothing — that's the privilege of a month. Exceptions: Jaffna transport in festival weeks, the Ella train seats, and your first two nights. Leave the rest open; the best weeks of long trips are never the planned ones.
Health over thirty days
Dengue odds rise with exposure time — make repellent a twice-daily routine, not a sometimes thing. Schedule real rest days (the Ella base exists for this). Thirty-plus-day travel insurance, not the standard 30-day policy — check the day limit in the fine print. Pace the sun; equatorial burn accumulates even through cloud.
Money and SIM for a month
A monthly Dialog tourist pack beats weekly top-ups. Carry a no-foreign-fee card plus a USD cash backup — ATMs are everywhere but have per-withdrawal limits that sting over a month. Small towns and the north run on cash; cards cover hotels and bigger restaurants.
Places: anuradhapura, sigiriya, kandy, nuwara-eliya, ella, arugam-bay, mirissa, galle, jaffna
