Who this is for

One week, first visit, want the greatest hits without a heart-attack pace. Two hotel moves in seven days — Galle side, then Ella side. If you'd rather stay south the whole time, read 7 Days Down South instead.

The route

Landmarks you'll actually remember

Sigiriya isn't on this route (no time — that's fine), so your landmarks are Galle Fort's ramparts and lighthouse, the stilt-less but still photogenic Mirissa harbour, Nine Arches, and a working tea factory in Nuwara Eliya.

Fun things to do

Surf lesson at Weligama (beginner bay), whale watching in season, safari jeep, train ride, tea plucking in your own basket, Fort café-hopping. If the sea is flat, swap whales for a snorkelling trip.

Favourites most travellers name

The train. Almost everyone says the Ella–Nuwara Eliya train is the single best day. Second place: sunset on the Galle ramparts with an isso wade from a street cart.

Cost shape

Sleep is the lever — Fort boutique rooms cost double Mirissa guesthouses. Moving leaks second (agree every fare before getting in). Doing leaks third (shortened whale boats, steered gem shops). Keep the mistakes list on your phone all week.

When to go

This exact loop is a November–April route: whales off Mirissa, calm southern seas, dry hill country. May–September brings the southwest monsoon to Galle and Mirissa — the route still works but the sea turns rough and whales leave. Ella is visitable year-round, wettest in October–November.

Getting around

Airport → Galle by expressway taxi (about 2.5 hours) or bus via Colombo. The south coast runs on buses and tuk-tuks. Day 4 (Mirissa → Udawalawe → Ella) is the one leg worth a private driver — safari timing plus hill roads in one day. Ella → Nuwara Eliya must be the reserved-seat train. Nuwara Eliya → airport goes via Kandy by road.

Where to stay

One Fort heritage splurge, one Mirissa guesthouse near the beach (not on the noisy harbour road), one Ella view room — Ella is small and sells out, so book it first. In Mirissa, Weligama is the overflow valve when prices spike.

What to eat on this route

Fort cafés plus isso wade from street carts at sunset. Mirissa harbour seafood grills — confirm the per-kilo price before they cook it. Ella's roti and kottu shops. Hill-country rice and curry with seeni sambol. King coconuts everywhere; drink three a day.

Budget: actual numbers

Mid-range couple: roughly $70–120/day for two excluding flights — rooms $40–80, a driver day $60–90 per car, Udawalawe jeep roughly $100–150 per jeep, whales roughly $30–50 per person, trains pennies. Backpacker version: $35–60/day with dorms and buses.

Packing for this trip

Reef-safe sunscreen, a sarong (temple cover-up and beach towel in one), a light rain shell for the hills, motion-sickness pills for the hill roads, and a universal adapter — Sri Lanka uses type D and G sockets, often both in one room.

Book before you fly

Ella train seats, the whale boat (in season), the Udawalawe jeep, and your first two nights. Everything else can wait until you're there.

Arrival: SIM, cash, first hour

Get the ETA visa online before flying. Buy a Dialog tourist SIM in arrivals — best island coverage. ATMs sit right after customs; grab cash because beach towns run on it. The PickMe app (local Uber) handles any Colombo leg honestly.
