The story in brief

In the Ramayana, Ravana — scholar-king of Lanka — abducts Seetha and holds her on the island until Rama's rescue. Sri Lankan tradition maps the epic onto real places: the captivity garden, the prison rock, the battlefield, the flying chariot's landing strips. Believers treat them as pilgrimage; everyone else gets spectacular sites with great stories.

Ella: Ravana's country

Ravana Falls (Ella's wide cascade, best after rain) and the Ravana cave temple above it — tradition says the rock hid Seetha. Climb early, swim the upper pools carefully, photograph the falls from the Ella road's first viewpoint. Nearby Divurumpola is marked as the fire-ordeal ground where Seetha proved her purity.

Nuwara Eliya: Seetha's captivity

The Seetha Amman temple sits by a stream in Seetha Eliya village, 5km from Nuwara Eliya and 1km from Hakgala Gardens — and Hakgala itself is identified as Ashok Vatika, the pleasure garden where Seetha waited. Inside: shrines to Rama, Seetha, Lakshmana and Hanuman, plus a Jatayu idol. Across the stream, priests point out rock depressions as Hanuman's footprints from his search for Seetha. Reach it by tuk or local bus from town; pair it with Hakgala Gardens and a tea factory morning.

Rumassala and the south

The jungle hill south of Galle is said to be a chunk of Himalaya dropped by Hanuman carrying healing herbs — its plants genuinely differ from surrounding flora, which keeps the legend alive. Walk the Peace Pagoda side for the bay views.

Koneswaram and the east

Trincomalee's cliff temple ties into Ravana mythology too (the king was Shiva's great devotee) — Swami Rock's drop and the Koneswaram towers layer epic over ocean. Devotees often pair it with Kataragama in the south.

The trail route that works

Two to three days inside a hill-country trip: Ella (Ravana Falls, cave, Divurumpola — one day) → Nuwara Eliya (Seetha Amman temple + Hakgala — half day with tea) → Rumassala as a Galle-day-trip add-on. Koneswaram joins naturally on any east-coast leg.

How to visit well

These are living Hindu temples first, epic sites second — dress covered, remove shoes, ask before photographing priests or rituals. Guides at Ella and Nuwara Eliya tell the stories best; let them. The epic's details vary teller to teller — that's tradition, not error.

Photo spots

Ravana Falls full-width after rain, the cave mouth framing the valley, Seetha Amman temple towers against Hakgala green, Rumassala's red cliffs over the bay, Swami Rock's sheer drop at Koneswaram.
